there are things that some people only consider using in 'an emergency', that i enjoy testing to see how usable those things are as a primary way of doing a thing.
for example, did you know you can make a very functional alchohol burner out of two soda cans, some scissors and a thumbtack? yeah, i know, 'in an emergency' and all that. but i made one and used it for a few days to heat all my water, and cook all my meals, just to see how comfortable it would be.
I used about 1 dollar a day in 99% isopropyl alchohol. that was retail drugstore cost, so im sure there are better alternatives. the stove has 1 setting, so making another with a little less airflow for a 'simmer' option works.
I think the reason i enjoy doing these little life experiments is because we are programmed to believe there are 'proper' ways of doing things, and so often those 'proper' ways require significant dependency on a system, and participation in it.
when i free myself from that thinking, i feel a tremendous sense of freedom and wealth in solving those things with less.
