Total depravity doesn't necessarily mean that nothing good is ever done. It means that we fall so far from God's ideal, that we seem worthless and evil.
As humans, we compare one person to another person. Some people seem so much better than others. Some seem pretty good, but if we use the correct measure, the perfect life of Jesus, then everyone comes up so short that we seem as if we do nothing right. A star in a dark (moon-free) night sky seems bright until the sun appears. Once the sun appears every star disappears into the sky as if it produces no light. Our righteousness is the same. On the other hand, when a full moon comes, reflecting the sun's light, it outshines all of the stars. As Christians, we should aim to reflect the righteousness of Christ.
