As much as I detest cars, and think private ownership of them should be banned, this is the canary in the coalmine of a housing crash.

When people are having their cars repossessed, they're making a pretty big decision there. It's not an "I'm short on cash" thing, it's a "Do I own a car or pay for food/bills/rent" thing.
