The point isn't to be ahead of other people, which is easy to gauge: how I am doing relative to those people?
It's to get where you're going quickly & safely. Which is not shown in your "relative" position.
We'll all get there faster if we used the whole road (zipper merge) & if we leave enough space between us and the next car, even if that means, the horror! the horror!, that someone can merge into it.
