Shimano in their recent technical education videos literally says that by allowing any button of your choice on the (electronic) shifter to act as the shift button, it eliminates confusion about which button shifts up and which button shifts down. So now if you hop on a friends Di2 equipped bike literally any button could be the shifter. Way less confusing than having two buttons that always do the same thing, I'm sure *facepalm*
