In almost all the David Lynch stories we have, there are no smartphones. Increasingly their introduction is looking like the pivot-point of our age, before and after. But that mood of his in film depends upon, and is a good reminder of, what the before times felt like. Sometimes I cut the phone and look into the shadows and realize how much of me is there. I initiated one day off each week this year, but I already want to increase it.
