My main backup server is very large and has slow disks. At certain times, especially when the server is under pressure (many concurrent backups, etc.), the I/O slows down. The Proxmox Backup Server doesn't like this, and the running VMs being backed up start showing high I/O wait.
This happened last night, waking me up.
In recent releases, it is possible to configure Proxmox to use local storage as a buffer, if available, but I decided that when the storage is on ZFS, I will use zfs-autobackup to manage these backups. I will lose the ability for live restore (which is useful in some cases for a quick restart), but for me, the backup process must not impact (except minimally and indirectly) the performance of the VMs.
