Dementia is so cruel. I have a blind 89 year old patient that is the sweetest. He's a gentle soul. At 2am he woke up and started sobbing. Gut wrenching, inconsolable crying. He was asking for his mother and begging her not to die. I went in and he thought I was his mother. Spent an hour holding his hand, stroking his head and telling him everything is okay. He made me promise not to die, calling me mama and saying I love you mama. I told him ,I love you too sweetie, get some rest I won't leave. He finally fell asleep.

I know I joke about sundowners and dementia. Coping mechanism. Big time. Seeing it and what it does is devastating. Helplessly watching these ppl trapped in the tatters of their souls with no way out.

I'm parked in front of my apartment crying rn. Grieving for this sweet man that is trapped in his most tragic memory. Losing his mother.
