Back in the day, Deaf people had to get creative if they wanted to wake up in the morning or know when someone was at the door. My friend who gave the commencement address today told a story about how he once built a doorbell using an old washing machine motor to spin and knock on the floor when someone pushed the button. He said he knew he’d over-engineered it when he was up fixing his roof one day and felt the entire house shaking - someone was ringing the doorbell.
