This “de-federate #Facebook” #FediPact thing is the exact kind of thing that always keeps #FOSS projects from ever being taken seriously. Purity tests, gatekeeping, afraid of anything even remotely mainstream. I get the distrust of #Meta, but I (like most people) don’t choose what software to use based on manifestos and ideologies. I choose based on user experience. Closed platforms will keep winning because average users don’t want to jump through all these hoops just to find themselves the target of a political pissing match. They’re just going to stay on Facebook and FOSS advocates will continue to wonder why no one takes the movement seriously. I’m here because #Twitter became a shitty #UX, not because #Mastodon suddenly got better. A LOT of people I know are still on Twitter/Facebook because Mastodon hasn’t given them a good enough reason to switch. If this platform wants to compete, we should be focused on fixing that.
Just once I would like to see an open source project compete based on user experience and genuine quality rather than political fear mongering and gatekeeping.
