Seen from Ransburg ~4km away, Hermannsdenkmal on Grotenburg (📷1) commemorates Cheruscan chieftain Arminius, a "man (Mann) of the army (Heer)" in Latin, b. ~17 BCE. He united many Germanic tribes against the Romans attempting to conquer them & in 9 CE the “barbarian” was victorious over Varus in Teutoburger Wald (📷2). Envisaged as a symbol of German strength & unity, the 1875 monument (📷3) has been controversial. It stands 53m tall (📷4).
