The elections may have some level of being rigged in parts of the US, but that's more or less just part of the process and the same 'rigged' process has elected democrats and republicans multiple times at this point. Media outlets *are* having to compete with a bazillion other channels but there's a sizeable audience to be divided amongst them - the days of the 1990s MTV or whatever having the size of audience they had may be gone, but the audience still is out there.
