A small victory for everyone: after a lot of pressure and backlash following the release of iOS 17.4, #Apple is no longer going to drop support for PWAs in the EU.
Apple mentioned the difficulty of complying with the constraint of opening up PWAs to web engines other than WebKit on iOS as the reason behind the malicious compliance.
I personally still don't get what's the problem of enforcing the same security checks to other web engines that are enforced for any other app, thus bringing also a PWA installed via e.g. Firefox under the same security umbrella, but for now it seems that Apple will comply only if PWAs on iOS are run on WebKit exclusively.
