I'm a little slow to this, but the whole ESG movement makes a lot more sense to me now. It was a moralistic smokescreen to explain to the public why all the companies were doing the same weird, counterproductive things. It was designed to make the public believe it's the people's/investors' wills that are directing it, not a few plutocrats controlling Blackrock/Vanguard/etc.
