3/3

Some final notes on how Disgaea 7 stacks up on the Based Morality Scale – I’d say that we’re dealing with a pretty clear +1/-1 here. On the plus side, the fanservice game is on point – the Lolis are flatter than ever, while the boobs of the busty characters are as big and bouncy as you could possibly ask for, and plenty of delicious anime girl asses (only covered by thongs) are also on full display. You even got a prominent Muscle Girl in the form of Higan Zesshosai (imagine an adult amazon Etna), who could surely crush diamonds between her formidable thighs, and Pirilika is of course a real cutie. Global Standards are gloriously absent, with the developers seeming more eager than ever to give its straight, male fanbase exactly what it wants, and making no concessions to whiny game journos.

Early on, the main storyline also appears surprisingly Redpilled, with the villain essentially having as his mission to *open up* the land of Hinomoto to outsiders, but as the story develops the picture becomes far more murky. A theme of fatherhood is also prominent, and the game does a fairly good job of balancing a truly terrible father character with some much more positive fathers and father figures.

Much less welcome was a late, bizarre theme of self-sacrifice apparently being Bad, which if taken seriously clashes directly with several pretty major story events, and a throwaway line about affirming “demons that aren’t demonic, and angels who aren’t angelic” could be viewed as affirming various dysgenic freaks and deviants currently causing trouble in the real world. Higan’s portrayal also gave me somewhat unpleasant Femdom vibes at times, especially with the way she uses her spear to practice proctology on multiple minor male villains (I’d really have liked it if at least one female character also got her ass poked with that spear). And of course, while the localizers don’t seem to have really inserted any leftist agenda or current year politics into the script, it’s hardly a fully faithful translation overall.

That said, all these are quite minor issues, and easily made up for by the lovely, unapologetic fanservice, meaning that Disgaea 7 on the whole fares better than any of the modern Fire Emblem games in terms of Based Morality. There’s nothing here I’d consider even close to a dealbreaker, nor anything that seriously took me out of the experience. In the end, while not my favorite in the series (I’d easily rank Disgaea 5 and 4 ahead of it), this is still a game that I can safely recommend, and one I had a great time with.
