But that's precisely the point, I think: paperclip maximization is about the fear that AI would be as idiotic as humans. Musk would certainly turn the word into parking lots for Teslas (and mines for lithium). I think that's a stronger point than just "what of the machine do ..." What if the machines behave like their owners? That's what's really scary. And (IMHO) paperclip maximization exists to hide that.
