Actually, it is not getting dumber; the overall amount of knowledge is increasing, and there are more and more specialists. But the mainstream is slowly transforming into the dumb mass depicted in the movie "Idiocracy."
This is due to the rampant addiction to endorphins. An addiction to cheap endorphins.
Endorphins (happiness hormones) are not inherently bad. For example, when they are released after a 40-minute run in the woods, or when teenagers receive a good grade on a test. Or when you simply write a book or record an album and then take joy in the fact that you have accomplished something. Those are expensive, good endorphins.
Cheap endorphins are, as the name suggests, cheap. You have to do little to achieve maximum release. Drugs, pornography, social media timelines full of funny memes—all of this provides cheap endorphins and conditions people to have a high time preference (HTP).
A little HTP is okay; after all, you need to eat or relax sometimes. But if you scroll on your phone for over 30 minutes, you enter a dangerous territory.
Cheap endorphins should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. And children should be encouraged to avoid cheap endorphins and to seek out expensive endorphins. Otherwise, we will soon have an illiterate idiocracy, where immoral political actors have an easy time manipulating society.
