I think they hit a point about 3 or 4 albums in where they were successful enough where they decided to play the music they liked, regardless of anyone's expectations.
This rings true to me, and it negates some of the criticism about how the band's sound may have changed.
They're artists and they don't owe their audience anything.
As long as they can make a living, they can do whatever they like.
