It is uncanny the level coincidence I am currently experiencing at the hands of the simulation.
In this episode, I am watching a lovely documentary on Claude Shannon called Bit Player. I am not done yet. I am taking a break to capture a thought I had whilst watching said documentary. It is an emergency. Call it an information theory emergency.
Claude talks about the content of the message being relayed from sender to receiver being irrelevant to the universal communication system he built (and we are currently using) to the fidelity of the information being transmitted.
Funny, I watched a podcast earlier with NVK (npub132e…zmdh) and petermccormack (npub14mc…frlx) on AI and artificial general intelligence (AGI) whereby Nvk explains this very idea. It is about vector math and statistical proximity that gives rise to the magic that is AI spitting out results that boggles the imagination. It is not human intelligence by any stretch of the imagination.
Then I remembered one of my favorite books, Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. In it, they put forward the Nobel prize winning theory (prospect theory) that is based on human intelligence being divided into system 1 (thinking fast and being error-prone) and system 2 (thinking consciously and deliberately). As a shorthand, thinking fast is not thinking at all, but reacting quickly as an evolutionary response for self-preservation, while thinking slow is about taking great care because getting something wrong can be hugely costly. Like Bitcoin.
To put these threads all together now, you have information and/or communication technology (like this iPhone that I am using now) which is powered by math to transmit the message without any human-like intelligence of the content of the message. As is similar with so-called AI. And we have a brain that puts meaning into messages we get from stimuli via system 1 or system 2, depending on the costs associated with getting the message right or wrong.
We are a state-"meaning" machine then. Depending on what we expose ourself to; we are helpless in our ability to ignore the message or not transmit it somehow. System 1 is the default.
Abdicating responsibility to machines to reverse engineer meaning into our lives is therefore the true and very real danger. Stay safe out there.
