Xlib is generally known to be a horrible mess, though it's been improved somewhat. Xcb should be better, though I think you still need to use xlib for glx. Maybe EGL is safer.
Interestingly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffer_overflow#History says "the earliest documented hostile exploitation of a buffer overflow was in 1988." Which is the year after X version 11 was released. So even something like this mostly wasn't a concern at the time.
