There's tools out there to pipe RSS feeds into email (I'm guessing that's what The Contrarian is doing behind the scenes), but RSS can also be turned into bookmarks (as livemarks does), or Mastodon posts (as Mastofeed does). There are dedicated RSS Reader apps out there (I use inoreader.com) ... it's all about the flexibility to have the updates routed to whatever place works best for your needs. :)
I don't really use livemarks' bookmarking option, since I rarely think to go clicking through my bookmarks. inoreader.com works pretty well for me, as that offers me a consolidated "time to read some news feeds from blogs I follow" type interface.
