Typically I use `find` when I don't know where the file is (hence I want to find it), as `find` will search in sub directories too and is easier then using `ls` for that.
Yes, if I only wanted to see what the file's attributes are then `ls -l <filename>` would do the trick (not sure why you need to pipe it through grep).
