When my gay son "came out" to me, it was a non-issue. There was no tension involved because he already knew I wouldn't make any kind of an issue of it, so it came off as an "oh, by the way, I've been meaning to tell you" kind of thing. In fact, it ended up being kind of funny and we had a good laugh.
Don't forget that not every teenager has that situation. For many, it's a really stressful conversation. Don't do anything to help abusive parents make it worse.
