I think the downside would be that individuals who don’t want to take responsibility for their own property (money, identity, communication protocols, etc), would suffer. The lazy and apathetic towards holding their own keys, for example, will always need the “help” of the government, and thus, government will always have some control over these things.
It feels like we will always be the minority in that sense. Societal apathy is the norm. Which is frightening.
