It makes any exposed iron on the surface turn rusty. Try peroxide and baking soda. Use the peroxide full strength, maybe 2-3 oz, and a teaspoon of bicarb at the same time. Cap it, shake a few times, wait a few minutes, shake again and rinse. This has cured most cases of water bottle plague I've had. If that fails, order a box of borax/borate based commercial coffee urn cleaner. Dissolves the smut but it's nice to metals.
