Some further (not very original thinking):
this is probably the "normal" thing.

at some point, every incumbent reaches a stage where they are unable to compete fairly in an open market.

So then they begin exploiting the legal systems to try and bolster revenue streams.

If competition laws are not strong enough, they go after their competitors.
If it is, they look for other targets. Sometimes their own customers.
