I think that the reason why there were no software updates back then, at least not in the modern sense, is that network connectivity was too expensive, which in turn means that machines didn't come by default with the hardware for such connectivity, chicken and egg. That remained true into the home PC era, I remember Windows 95 having an single annual update on CD, that you had to pay for.
