the financial blockade was a result of the invasion.
the 2014 sanctions were in response to Putin anexing crima. doesn't matter what it was 100 years ago, the boarders were agreed upon between russia and Ukraine after the fall of the Soviet Union.
as for NATO expansion, Putin's war has now lead to even more NATO expansion.
if his goal was to avoid that , he's fucked up again.
the reality of this whole situation is that Putins ratings were shit and he wanted to boost them , just like he did with Crimea.
and his ratings were shit then because the fucking cunt had turned the russian constitution into toilet paper , made himself a president again, falsified results and starting repressing any kind of opposition.
then carried on assassinating people in other countries.
back to today, he was told that Ukraine would fall in 3 days and the soldiers would be welcomed with open arms. the guy doesn't even use the internet and is surrounded by yes men.
Yanukovich was on a plane , waiting to be installed back as president.
he planned a quick little pr operation that failed miserably and all the back peddling now is because he is stuck in a dilemma where he can't walk away and can't win outright.
zelensky is at least democraticly elected. the current restrictions on elections and media are a wartime measure. pre war , it was no problem.
pre war in Russia however is a total block on all non-state media , no democracy, total propaganda around the clock.
I lived there for a decade , studied russian history, speak fluent russian , have a russian wife and I check in with russian media once a week just to see what version of events and justification they are coming up with next.
Im not a fan of most governments and I certainly don't think the US or EU are angles , but this conflict was started by Putin.
let's not gaslight here.
the amount of Kremlin propaganda that has seeped into western discorce is quite staggering
