Not really. They have similar uses and I can save and pay in both. One is better for saving, one is better for spending. Monero needs Bitcoin (swapping BTC for XMR is trivial and it's way easier to onramp from BTC compared to FIAT) more than the other way around at the moment but that might change.
Subtle differences in general sense. GPU vs ASIC but both are POW. Tail emission vs hard cap yet Monero inflation is tiny.
If we take the maxi stance on either side then yes they are chalk and cheese but I don't think that's the way forward to take advantage of both.
