One thought occurred to me while watching “The Last of Us” — shows like this often dial up the display of how much more authoritarian government institutions can be (i.e. quarantine offenders are hung to death in the show).
This in turn can drive people watching to look at their own situation as a small inconvenience in comparison, even though in reality their freedoms are being stripped away.
This nips rebellion in the bud and give room to the powers to move the needle even more the next time around.
