You could try installing a different VPN to ensure it's not using any stored crap. I might try migrating data into a different browser (that means a Mozilla or other non-Chrome browser), purging, not just deleting, Chrome/Chromium, reinstalling Chrome or Chromium and migrating my data back. There might be old config files laying around. In Linux, look in home dir dot files. In Windows, check Application Data.
