My dad lost his nail puller / pry bar, so he asked me to forge him one. I'll be giving it to him today for father's day.
I used a piece of thin (¼") trailer spring as the parent stock. I cut it a few inches after the center hole, so I could use that as the starting point of the nail puller. I took a piece of scrap mild steel and formed that into an oval shaped punch to make the depression around the hole, and at the ends where the splits are.
Making the bends was easy enough, I just used a jig to make the round turn, then clamped that into the vise and used bending forks to bend it backwards.
The nail puller was the biggest challenge, because I had to use a tiny cut off wheel in my Dremel to cut out the V notch, then smooth things out so there were no sharp corners.
Since this is 5160, I quenched in oil and then tempered at 550° in the kitchen oven.
