That's exactly how I teach this: you have a box full of open padlocks, and one key.
You give anybody who wants one a padlock. They can out stuff in a box, lock it with the padlock and send it to you, knowing only you can open it.
With authentication, they make up a secret sentence, write it on paper, put it in a box and lock it with your padlock. You open it, and read out the sentence. They now know it must be you, nobody else could have opened the box.
