The Convention is one of a series of bilateral treaties concluded by the United States from 1891 onwards, primarily with European and Latin American countries, to protect the copyrights of US citizens abroad. It continues to apply unchanged and is still effective today as the Federal Republic of Germany is the legal successor of the German Empire.
