Man, fuck CloudWatch. It is probably my most-hated AWS service.
It fucks-up your timestamps by adding its' own (non-optional). That can also fuck-up your formatting (if you're sending in JSON, etc) because of their stupid timestamp prefix.
CloudWatch is the default log destination for pretty much every service, but it's really expensive (both in ingest, and storage).
Some AWS services (looking at you, Route 53 Resolver Logging) are blatantly deceptive, saying they will "deliver the logs to S3," but actually use CloudWatch (as the most expensive possible) middleman. These services could just as easily use Kinesis, but that would cost 85% less than CloudWatch, and thus would be a giant, hidden cash cow for AWS.
In summary: DIAF CloudWatch. You are the right solution for nothing, and a rent-seeking vampire for everything.
