Water
There has been no measurable rainfall at Austin-Bergstrom Airport for 37 days. The ground is dry and dusty in places where the rocky soil is friable, and fractured with quarter-inch wide cracks in areas of higher clay content where varying moisture causes expansion and contraction. Dry grasses, forbs, and woody plants are susceptible to potential ignition and wildfires. Three different ponds along the Slaughter Creek / Bauerle Ranch Greenbelt trails collect runoff from rains and supply water to native wildlife—birds, fishes, turtles, frogs, water snakes, dragonflies, damselflies, deer, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, armadillos, foxes, squirrels, coyotes, and others. The ponds are now nearly dry. Yesterday a pair of great blue herons, one of them in the white form, were wading and eating their fill of small aquatic creatures trapped in puddles where a pond used to be. (1/4)
