I didn't expect to do a pseudo deep-dive on the reaction to Bsky's new logo and logomark tonight XD I guess that's what happens when new updates to stuff pops up.
Me, I think the butterfly is fine, I just wish companies would stop using boring sans serif fonts that literally are just the same LOL
(Yes, yes, I know about the whole "needs to be minimalistic sans serif due to phones and tablets" but also *raspsberries*)
Twitter seems to like it, appreciate it, saying that it has the potential to be iconic like Twitter's bird. (I could have missed all the naysayers.)
As far as I can tell, meanwhile (and I could be wrong), almost everyone on Bsky hates it. I saw a couple of off-color jokes about it, and some where I can't tell if they were joking or serious.
It's...a little unnerving, to be honest? Like sure, there's a joke to be made about how nobody likes change or that it's the Twitter "mindset"* operating on Bsky where nobody likes anything. Maybe there's space where you think about why the butterfly for Bluesky, since the bird for Twitter was an obvious choice (birds tweet tweet, after all.) Although Bsky themselves said they chose the butterfly because everyone used it as a signal to mean Bluesky. Where THAT originated from, idk, but that's basic semiotics \ o / I think it's a fair thing to keep in mind, design-wise.
Maybe it's the fact that they spent time redesigning a logo and logomark instead of adding features like DMs, hashtags, and others to the service. A fair point! Maybe the Twitter people love it because nostalgia, they would rather relive Twitter on Bsky, and so are willing to love the new logo.
I have no idea. All I know is, something feels off about the reaction to this logomark over on Bsky. Maybe since I think it's actually fine, the hate to it makes no sense to me?
Then again, there may be brand conflict. Inkblot uses a stylized butterfly for their branding, and they were around before Bsky so uh. Good luck lol https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inkblotapp.android&hl=en_US&gl=US&pli=1
*Otherwise known as "uhhhh I'm too scared to be sincere and nice, so I'll just be like everyone else and be a cool kid who hates everything. Yeah, that's my excuse for why I'm a jerk!"
