Just back from the supermarket.

Had to cross an underpass which is currently inhabited by Charlottenburg's regular homeless population that was displaced by officials due to the Euros.

I don't really have much to fear of these people in general and me specifically because they know me as someone who often hangs around near their regular spot and always has a few bucks, a water or something to spare.

And I often catch myself wondering how they all got there. You know the stories. It's a rough bunch. There is definitely some where it isn't so clear what came first the homelessness or the substance abuse. It doesn't matter anyways.

I once understood that my prejudice about the people is bullshit because I saw one of them cry reading the "Little Prince".

But today, I saw a new face among them. A scrawny but over all well-put together lady of, I think, retirement age.

How on earth did she get there? And the look on here face told me she was new to this and didn't have an answer for that question herself.

Because this is West Berlin, I speculated she's a stay-at-home-wife where the breadwinner is suddenly out of the picture.

And it doesn't really matter what the exact circumstances are.... I looked at her and realised that most likely the only crime this woman ever committed was never becoming rich enough to retire in peace.

It breaks your fucking heart. It really does.
