Sydney started the new year with a fireworks display over the harbor, which was seen by millions within the country and abroad. The city's seven-song soundtrack, 'Midnight Moment', was synchronized with lights, lasers, and fireworks. The fireworks and laser display at the Sky Tower lasted for five minutes and 30 seconds, counting down to 10 seconds on the tower's base. After that, 500 kilograms of fireworks were launched from the tower, the highest in the Southern Hemisphere. Above the Auckland Harbour Bridge, 90,000 color-changing lights were extinguished before the countdown to midnight. In Wellington, the capital city, fireworks and music displays were held on an inland lake in the city center. Earlier, Kiribati, an island in the Pacific Ocean with a population of around 5,000, welcomed the new year, and is always the first inhabited place to start the new year.
