There used to be a lot of alternative press newswires. In the 1970s, underground newspapers were possibly more plentiful than anyone might suspect today. Every major city and lots of not so major cities had mimeographed or spirit duplicated local papers running local stories and national reprints.
They fell apart through a combination of natural internal dissent and active interfence from the fbi as part of the coinprotel program.
The underground press syndicate and liberation news service were the big ones, and a great place to start researching if this is something you care about.
