In five years we will look back at this episode of Donald Trump and the Republican Party feigning support for #Bitcoin, and all of the people lining up behind Bitcoin Magazine’s recent platforming of this “package” as one of the biggest favours for the values and vision and expressed by progressive values (which I distinguish from values and policy expressed by the Democratic Party in the U.S.).

Bitcoin is a network, money and tool that is gradually freeing individuals and communities around the world from the shackles of global debt-money structures and systems.

Bitcoin is disrupting narratives and binary political and social frameworks.

When Bitcoin was created and launched, it was done with the understanding that, ultimately, human self-interest, ego, fallibility would remain motivating forces for many (most?) people adopting and using Bitcoin. Human, all too human, we remain.

It is, of course, this human fallibility which is causing many Bitcoin adopters in the U.S. (with some allies elsewhere) to promote freedom, moral and spiritual renewal, and progress, on the one hand, while on the other hand investing hope for these into a character (Trump) who is the archetype of moral and spiritual decay, decadence, opportunism, and psychopathy. The cognitive dissonance is piercing.

Yet, this episode will raise the visibility of Bitcoin; it will contribute to adoption (albeit skewed); and it will shift that Overton Window surrounding Bitcoin’s use and role globally. In so doing, however, it will advance a tool and movement globally that is disrupting the Imperial project perpetuated by the United States and it will extol the virtues of inclusion, equity and fairness that forms the basis of a progressive program, but which many politicians in the U.S. that are breaking away form the Democratic Party are still not prepared to effectively bring forward, captive as they are to strategy hinged on social and cultural analysis and bankrupt in political economy. The shift will happen, but not just yet apparently.

In the long run, the opportunistic and highly individualistic support by Trump, Republican Party, and Bitcoin affiliates will seed and fertilize the ground for the next stage of this evolutionary process for/with Bitcoin; one that is fundamentally more inclusive, communitarian, and global/humanitarian.

In the meantime, those of us who can see a bit further into the future must hold our noses and endure the stench of the manure. However, I do firmly believe it will be worth it.

Love and peace, y’all! 🧡
