And I applaud you not wasting time, effort and budget on this. There is an extent to which this stuff is a scam, much like crypto. And you avoid it for similarly good reasons.

But I think the bigger issue is that these things are simply not really that useful in the form they currently have. What is there looks frankly like an amusing toy, that has some limited ability to summarize information.

Though that information - like much of what's on the web - doesn't necessarily come from a reliable source. What this means in a web context is that these systems tend to obscure sources.

This leads to people being less able to make useful judgements about the information they're receiving. Is this "lying" as the blog post talks about? Not really. It's mostly random garbage, some of which is malicious misinformation.

It is important that when we're critical about flawed things that we're precise. What would be particularly problematic is to perpetuate the idea that machine learning environments somehow are "alive" or are "dangerous." They're not really. People perpetuating those ideas are often mis-informed, or disingenuous.

These things don't lie to you. They're simply not very good, and aren't that useful. Don't get angry or "create sides." Simply move on.
