I don't know that they do. Take the Haudenosaunee Confederacy for one example. It's been around over a 1,000 years, and was the model for the USA and it's constitution. I think the lesson to draw from the decline of those egalitarian societies isn't that it's a bad idea, but that it shouldn't make one foolhardy enough to believe that automatically exempts you from becoming subject to external aggression from more warlike neighbours. The other thing you can draw from the Haudenosaunee constitution (Gayanashagowa) is the necessity of mandating a compatible cultural ethos among immigrants before they're allowed to obtain citizenship and voting rights. It's far more complex than simply "equality == the baaad" (aka: "immigrunts be tak'n muh jobbbzzz").
