I usually spitball my current understanding of the problem and then mention a lot more research and reverse engineering is needed. They usually give up after that when they realize it's not just "writing some kernel code in $foo driver".

Sometimes we do get someone willing to try RE though, and if they stick around and it leads somewhere, that's how we ended up with most of our core devs :)
