This was pretty much my experience. I went all in one year with different peppers, vegetables, and herbs. It took a lot of work and time, and the results (or at least, the results left after the local animals ate their share) were...ok.
I'm sure if I had kept at it for a few seasons I would have gotten better, but it seemed like a hell of an investment just to save 75 cents on a green pepper.
