I’ve seen “take a different tact” in two formal (journalistic or academic) publications this week—it’s “take a different tack,” historically, and comes from sailing—but the image of picking an alternate form of diplomacy from a jar or something is kind of charming.
(I’ll still fight for “free rein” over the newer “free reign,” though—it’s about horses, not monarchs, and cross-species partnership is much cooler than absolute rule.)
