US neocons have been encroaching on Russia since end of Cold War continuously breaking their word again and again and surrounding Russia with western military power installations (NATO). Ukraine was always the boss red line not to cross as US intelligence admitted in the 90s. It too was crossed. Of course Russia responded. They were seriously PROVOKED (which btw is a great tome).
All the consequences including tearing the hell out of Ukraine and seeking now much of its resources it needs to ever recover were the fault of the US.
