Wierd #SciFi idea of the day that sounds like it shouldn't work, but the science says it might - upconversion #solar cells. A composite structure where a layer absorbs infrared radiation and remits it at a higher frequency for the other layers to utilize.
Upconversion basically means that you get something to emit photons at higher energy than the photons it absorbs, emitting fewer photons than absorbed. But it opens a full wavelength range we couldn't utilize otherwise.
