They're probably both indirect side-effects of some underlying process. (And my expectation is that senescence arises simply because it only emerges after reproductive age, so it isn't selected against by evolution. Not because it's inevitable. But it sneaked into our vertebrate ancestors really early, hence its ubiquity among multicellular animals.)
