tl;dr
3D Mario was a mistake.
The FLUDD-less levels are the only bearable parts of the game because they're about actual platforming instead of retarded gimmicks and puzzles.
But it'd be too easy if I could just say those parts were good. Because usually you have to make a long and bullshit trek within a level before you can access these sub-levels. And if you game over, you go back to Delfino, have to make your way to the level and then inside the level, towards the special area.
Then there are the physics that accurately simulate the player having a motor handicap:
